I Learned This the Expensive Way
In 2014, I had just moved out of the dorms at my first military duty station, and I thought: this is my time to start a business.
Money was tight, so I was living with a friend. Guess whose address I used to register my business with the IRS and the state? Yep. His.
Three years later I started applying for business credit, and I got denied. Again and again. When I finally called to ask why, they told me they couldn't verify my business. My applications said one address and my state and IRS records said another. Fixing it cost me money and weeks of waiting.
Then I made it worse. I paid a "funding company" $500 up front plus 9% of whatever they got me. They took my personal credit and applied everywhere at once. I ended up with 7+ hard inquiries and four or five new credit cards in my personal name that had nothing to do with my business.
Later, active-duty orders moved me from Washington State to Alabama. I put the move on my cards, my score dipped, and my business credit limits got cut, even though I'd never missed a payment. Lenders were quietly checking my personal credit the whole time.
So I turned everything I learned, plus the patterns from 104 client files, into a 14-step playbook anyone can follow. No guesswork. No paying someone 9% to wreck your credit.
